Zebra kwagga [2], formerly also: quagga [4] (Equus quagga quagga) - an extinct subspecies of the steppe zebra, living in South Africa until the 19th century. For a long time it was considered a separate species, only genetic studies showed that it is the southernmost subspecies of the steppe zebra. It was particularly closely related to the zebra zebra (Equus quagga burchellii). Its name comes from the sound it makes, written in English as kwa-ha-ha.
