The Shrike Root [8] (Gymnorhina tibicen) - a medium-sized black and white bird of the ostrich family, whose native range covers Australia and southern New Guinea. Even though it was formerly divided into three species, it is now considered one species with nine subspecies by the IOC. Called in English Australian magpie - literally Australian magpie - the bird has nothing to do with the Eurasian magpie, which is a representative of corvids. Adult shrimps are quite robust birds with a body length ranging between 37 and 43 cm and characteristic black and white plumage, red eyes and a strong, wedge-shaped, white-blue-black beak. The male and female are similar in appearance - they can be distinguished by marking on the spine. Due to its long legs, the shrike walks rather than jumps and spends most of its time on the ground.
