Whooper crane (Grus americana) is a species of large water bird in the family of cranes (Gruidae). It currently lives in Bison Forest National Park in Canada (this population winters at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge). In addition, captive birds were formed into a sedentary population in Kissimmee Prairie, Florida, and a small population in the Rocky Mountains inhabiting the Grass Lake National Wildlife Refuge and wintering in the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge (this population does not support itself). In addition, some birds are in captivity. Formerly they inhabited a strip from southwestern Canada to Lake Michigan. The wintering grounds were located on the Atlantic coast of the USA and in northern Mexico. In addition, the settled population lived on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
