Long-tailed spotted eagle [5], long-haired warrior [6] (Lophaetus occipitalis) - a species of predatory bird from the hawk family, the only representative of the genus Lophaetus. It lives in tropical Africa south of the Sahara. Males reach a body weight of 0.9-1.4 kg, females 1.4-1.5 kg [note needed]. These birds are about 53-58 cm long [7]. Their plumage is mostly black, but the tail and wingtips are lighter in color. They feed mainly on small mammals and birds, less frequently on lizards, insects, crabs, fish and snakes. Recent genetic research suggests that L. occipitalis is related to the Malayan eagle (Ictinaetus malayensis) [8] [9].
