Algerian woodpecker (Picus vaillantii) [4] - a species of woodpecker found in the Atlas Mountains [5]. Length 30–32 cm [2]. Both sexes have a black mustache not connected with a dark halter (in a female of a similar green woodpecker of the sharpei subspecies, the mustache and a dark halter combine) [5]. The male has a red cap from the forehead to the back of the head, the female has a red cap only on the back, and it is spotted in black on top of the head [6].
