The distribution range of the short-tailed alexandretta is found in south-west Mauritius in an area of approximately 60 km²; in the rest of the island it became extinct. It occurs in forests and bushes, both lowland and upland [12] [7]. Coverage has shrunk dramatically as Mauritius has around 1.27% of the previous forest area left over from environmental degradation [13]. Birds of this species have favorite fruiting trees to which they return, sometimes feeding on them for several generations [12]. In the past, apart from the island of Reunion, the species also occurred in the Seychelles and Rodrigues [14].
