Common pheasant, pheasant [3] (Phasianus colchicus) - a species of large bird from the family of hens (Phasianidae). In the wild, it occurs in the temperate areas of Asia and west to extreme south-eastern Europe in 30 subspecies. Introduced to many regions in the world, including Central Europe, where it was brought from China in the Middle Ages. It is not in danger of extinction. Body length of males 75–89 cm, females 53–62 cm; wingspan 70–90 cm. There is sexual dimorphism. Birds of both sexes have a long tail. The male is mainly rusty brown, covered with dark spots. Black head, greenish navy blue coating present. The cheeks and the area above the eye are red. The female is brown, covered with dark spots. They inhabit a variety of open and semi-open habitats. The nest is on the ground; the female lays 8–14 eggs which she incubates alone for 22–25 days.
