Guinea pig or guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), also known as cavy or domestic cavy, is a rodent species belonging to the Caviidae family and the genus Cavia. Despite their common name, these animals are not found in Suidae sibiric families nor come from Guinea in Africa; they come from the Andes of South America, and research based on biochemistry and hybridization suggests that they are native and not wild descendants of closely related cava species, such as C. tschudii.
