In the Middle Ages, he was depicted with the head and body of a white (less often red and black) horse, sometimes adding deer legs and a lion's tail. The unicorn was considered to be the only animal that had the courage to attack the elephant, with hooves so sharp that one strike of them would cut open the elephant's belly [1].
